User testing is one of the most effective ways to improve your website design because it lets you see how real people interact with your site. Instead of guessing what users want, you analyze their actions, gather their verbal responses, and adjust your design using real-world evidence.


Start by identifying your target audience. Who is your core user base? Recruit a small group of individuals who match that profile. Even a handful of users can reveal critical issues—6–12 participants can uncover most major issues.


Set up simple tasks that reflect common goals on your website. Try having them locate a specific item, subscribe to your updates, or locate contact information. Watch how they navigate. Take notes on where they hesitate, what elements trip them up, or which links they误点. Avoid leading them. If they’re struggling to proceed, don’t give hints unless they ask. Let them struggle a little—it reveals real problems.


Record the sessions if possible. Recording sessions enables you to identify trends in real time. Pay attention to emotional reactions, speech cadence, and hesitations. These subtle cues often tell you more than what users say outright. After each session, ask a few open-ended questions like: What were you hoping to accomplish on this page? or How would you explain this to someone unfamiliar with the site?
